Girl gamers face a vicious RAPE CULTURE in the gaming world, where male gamers threaten to rape girls and women, make death threats, and call them whores, cunts, bitches, sluts, and other horrible things, and hurl sexist insults at them, in order to try to intimidate them for daring to trespass into a "boys only" gaming culture. Also, the extremely sexist portrayals of female characters in video games reflects this deep-rooted sexism.
Nearly all female characters in video games are extremely sexualized and objectified, wearing tight, sexy and revealing clothes, often with their breasts hanging out -- women and girls are seen as eye candy to sexually arouse boys and men. Violence against women is accepted and even celebrated in many video games (this is RAPE CULTURE) -- including raping and murdering women, in games such as Grand Theft Auto and Duke Nukem Forever. Sexism in gaming culture carries over into how girl gamers are treated by male gamers. Rape threats, death threats, threats of violence, and sexual harassment of female/girl gamers is rampant in the male-dominated gaming world in online multiplayer games, where gamers can play live against each other (and hear each other's voices) on consoles such as X-Box Live during various popular online video games like "Halo," "Call of Duty, " "Dead or Alive," "Assassin's Creed," "Left 4 Dead" etc. In August 2012, The New York Times discussed sexual harassment of girls in gaming. Girl gamers are often afraid to use female sounding names or speak aloud doing live video game play, because when male gamers realize they're playing against a girl, they unleash a torrent of sexist abuse against the girl player, demanding sex, making rape threats and death threats, and calling the girl players bitches, sluts, whores, etc.

In June 2012, feminist media critic, Anita Sarkeesian decided to challenge the sexism in the video game/gaming world by planning to produce a video series challenging sexist stereotyping of women in videogames.
Gaming is a male-dominated culture known for its misogyny and hostility towards women. Suddenly the internet exploded with angry male gamers who viciously attacked Anita online. Anita received death threats and rape threats from sexist male gamers online when she announced a Kickstarter campaign in June 2012 to raise $6,000 to produce a new online video series to challenge sexist portrayals of women in video games. Anita Sarkeesian was targeted by women-hating, male gamers in a firestorm of vicious misogynistic online attacks. Her email was hacked, her Wikipedia page was defaced with sexist slurs, disgusting pornographic cartoons were drawn of her in degrading situations and posted on the internet -- and one angry male gamer created a "Beat Up Anita Sarkeesian" video game, where players clicked a button to punch her face bloody. |
