In June 2012, feminist media critic, Anita Sarkeesian decided to challenge the sexism in the video game/gaming world by planning to produce a video series challenging sexist stereotyping of women in videogames. Gaming is a male-dominated culture known for its misogyny and hostility towards women.
Anita received death threats and rape threats from sexist male gamers online when she announced a Kickstarter campaign in June 2012 to raise $6,000 to produce a new online video series to challenge sexist portrayals of women in video games. Anita Sarkeesian was targeted by women-hating, misogynistic male gamers in a firestorm of vicious misogynistic online attacks, in a campaign to try to silence her as an outspoken feminist. The online sexist harassment of women writers and bloggers is a serious problem, and the misogynistic hate campaign directed against Anita received international media attention (including the Huffington Post UK) -- the campaign against Anita was mentioned in a August 2012 New York Times article on the sexual harassment of female gamers and misogyny in the male-dominated gaming culture. |

"Beat Up Anita Sarkeesian" Video Game
Created by Sexist Misogynistic Male Gamer By threatening Anita with rape and violence, sexist men were trying to silence Anita and intimidate her, so she would stop speaking out on feminist issues.
A misogynist male gamer even created a horrifying online video game (later taken down) called "Beat up Anita Sarkeesian," where players were told to click to punch Anita in the face repeatedly, until her face was covered in huge purple bruises, and blood was running down her face.
