A treasure trove of feminist books to educate and inspire you to action !
Female Chauvinist Pigs is an awesome, eye-opening feminist book that's especially relevant for young feminists ! Meet the Female Chauvinist Pig -- the new brand of supposedly "empowered woman" who embraces sexist "raunch culture" wherever she finds it. Author Ariel Levy points out that young girls and young women have internalized "raunch" culture to the point where they are now objectifying themselves as sex objects and (wearing Playboy bunny t-shirts, trying to be "girls gone wild" etc.) and women are being duped and are wrongly calling this "liberation" instead of realizing it's just old-school sexism re-packaged as "cool."
In her groundbreaking book, New York magazine writer Ariel Levy says DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE -- she argues that, if male chauvinist pigs of years past thought of women as pieces of meat, Female Chauvinist Pigs of today are doing them one better, making sex objects of other women -- and of themselves. Irresistibly witty and wickedly intelligent, Female Chauvinist Pigs makes the case that the rise of raunch culture doesn't represent how far women have come -- it only proves how crazy the culture has become, and how women need to reject this crap ! |
A great book for young feminists ! Hey, feminism isn’t dead --it's just that many young women don't realize how important and relevant feminism is to their everyday lives -- and many young women don't see feminism as "cool."

How the Focus on Beauty is Actually a Political Tool Used to Keep Women From Gaining Political Power
The Beauty Myth, by the brilliant feminist, Naomi Wolf, explains how the focus on women's and girls' looks as a measure of our worth and the crushing social pressure to "look beautiful" (the "beauty myth") is used as a political tool to keep women from gaining power in society. The beauty myth is used as a method of social control of women.
The beauty myth is a form of social control which is just as restrictive as the traditional image of homemaker and wife. It's the beauty myth, an obsession with physical perfection that traps the modern woman in an endless spiral of hope, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of "the flawless beauty." Those in power use the "beauty myth" to keep women down politically. By shattering women's self-esteem though this focus on beauty, (and making sure the standard of beauty is impossible and unattainable, so none of us ever feel thin enough, pretty enough, or good enough) it keeps women distracted and busy chasing this ideal of so-called "beauty." |
